Backstage with Guido

Paris Fashion week: Alexander McQueen show – Hair by Guido Palau

Guido is a British-born hair stylist, known as a leading trend setter in the fashion industry. Guido grew up in an Anglo-Spanish family in Dorset, England. He toured Europe after high school, and then returned to London to work at the Vidal Sassoon Salon. After working in numerous hair salons, he decided that his passion was session hair styling for photographic shoots and fashion shows.

Today, Guido is described by British Vogue as “The World’s most in-demand hair stylist.” His styles are seen on the runways of fashion houses, including Prada, Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs, Lanvin, Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Ralph Lauren and Alexander McQueen. Beyond his catwalk and campaign work, Guido is the creative consultant for the professional haircare line Redken, a role he undertook in 2005.

Guido said: They’re Goody barrettes! They sent me 6,000 barrettes…we’re not using all of them. Sarah [Burton] showed me pictures of the past and pictures of the future, and I wanted it to be a head that wasn’t too big…I wanted it to be very modern and hard, but kind of soft at the same time. I was thinking of reflection—plastics and metals—and that movie Tron, the original and the remake. So all those kind of things. I’d done a ponytail covered in barrettes before, but here I flipped it up and did the whole head. So that’s how I got here. It’s amazing that something so inexpensive—these drugstore things that you get on a card—can be made into something so beautiful. I always say to people about hair accessories: it’s not what you spend, it’s what you do with them.

Get the look:

  • Put hair into a low ponytail
  • Place barrettes (silver or black) down the ponytail (see 1st picture)
  • Flip ponytail up and secure to the back of the head
  • Place clips around all other hair exposed portions of the head until hair is completely covered

Guido’s Favorite Hair products this season:

  • Redken Hair Spray #23
  • Redken Nature Rescue
  • Redken Thickening Lotion
  • Redken Shine Flash

  1. Funny thing is I use to wear my hair with a done of those hair clips I. Jr high….not On purpose. ppl would tease and then I started seeing a ton of girls with the whole back of their head with clips at school. I guess they teased because they didn’t think of it first. His way is much more glamourfied then mine in the 90’s

    • People always criticize others when they come up with something new, something they would never have thought about. Then, when magazines or celebrities start to wear this “new thing”, all of these criticizing people say that it’s not so bad after all!! ;) Be yourself, haters are your first fans! xx
